Sikkim university, a Central university, was established under an act of parliment of india and came into existence on 2 July 2007. Unlike in other states, there was no Government university in sikkim. The establishmetn of a Central University, fully funded by the Government of India, in Sikkim, fulfils a long cherished aspiration of the people of Sikkim and the entire Eastern Himalayan region to have a higher institution of learning.

SIKKIM UNIVERSITY, a Central University located in a peaceful and beautiful natural surroundings of Sikkim
in Eastern Himalayan region, is being designed in such a way so as to make it known for academic excellence
and research, for its all inclusive inst itutional character and a strong instrument of regional development and
cross-border integration. The University is trying to bring in the best practices of academic programmes,
teaching methods and curriculum designing and management system from both within and outside India and
build modern environment friendly infrastructure .
